A Land Flowing With Milk and Honey

God's Fruit

A land of wheat and barley, of vines, figs, and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey Deuteronomy 8:8 (The Israel Bible™)

The Bible names seven species as the special agricultural products of Eretz Yisrael. Each of these species is symbolic of the Jewish people. For example, grapes, which grow on low and weak vines, are crushed by foot in order to produce valuable wine. Similarly, the small and scattered Jewish nation, which has faced tremendous adversity and persecution, will ultimately be elevated to achieve its full potential and experience redemption. Shown here, a lavish collection of Israeli fruit is sold at the Mahane Yehuda open air market in Jerusalem.

A Land Flowing With Milk and Honey

He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey
Deuteronomy 26:9 (The Israel Bible™)

The above is one of the most beloved Biblical description of the Land of Israel. Rashi, a medieval Biblical commentator, explained this description literally: Milk flows from the goats, and honey comes from the dates and figs of the Land of Israel. Ramban, a second medieval Biblical scholar who lived approximately 200 years after Rashi, added that the word "flowing" in Deuteronomy 26:13 indicates exceptional fertility and abundance. Baklava, pictured above, is a popular and widely enjoyed dessert in Israel. Baklava's sweetness parallels the sweetness of the Land of Israel. One can not help but focus on the words "a land flowing with milk and honey" while enjoying this delicacy.

Here is an interesting tidbit you might not have known: the ‘honey’ that Israel is blessed with does not refer to bee’s honey, but according to Jewish tradition, refers to date honey which was a rich delicacy in Biblical times. From hardly growing any food 100 years ago, miraculously, Israel today is an agricultural exporter and in fact, produces  over 50% of the world’s Medjool dates. For the first time in centuries, it is truly the land flowing with milk and honey!

Rains of Blessing

I will grant your rains in their season, so that the earth shall yield its produce and the trees of the field their fruit
Leviticus 26:4 (The Israel Bible™)

The successful growth of Israel's crops, such as the wheat field pictured above, is a blessing from God, as it is He who Israel is dependent on to nourish the land. Israel does not have an independent body of water capable of sufficient irrigation. Rain can be a source of great blessing, but at the wrong times, or in the wrong amount, rain can also be a devastating curse.
