Vision is highly overrated. Just because you have a big dream or compelling goal or a passionate ambition does not make you a leader. Yes, leadership requires vision, but your CHARACTER is far more important to becoming an effective leader. Over the past 30 years while training over 400,000 pastors around the world I've met countless "visionaries" who never accomplished anything because they lacked the corresponding character.
A leader's vision is worthless without 3 essential character qualities: self-control, resilience, and authentic (not fake) love.
Self-control is the ability to delay gratification while you patiently work toward your goal. A lot of visionaries self-destruct before seeing their dream fulfilled because they never learned to manage their moods. They don't know how to what needs to be done when you don't feel like doing it.
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, from failures, from unfair attacks, betrayals, critics. Without resilience, you'll give up on your vision when the inevitable delays, difficulties, and dead-ends happen. There is no straight line to success. The path is paved with pitfalls.
Love is the ability to pay attention to the needs and feelings of others, and to consistently place those needs of others before your own. It doesn't matter how great your vision is, First Corinthians 13 says "Without love it is all worth NOTHING."
So if you want to be a leader... if you want to see your vision become reality... if you want last and make it to the finish line, and if you want your effectiveness decade ... work on these character qualities.
Before you can change the world, you must change yourself. You are responsible for the depth of your character. God is responsible for the breadth of your leadership.
If you're serious about doing the hard work of becoming the kind of person God can use in big ways, I'm willing to help you. Here's a simple start: Subscribe to the free weekly Ministry Toolbox at http://www.pastors.com. Then email me and ask to be considered for an invitation to my intensive training for pastors this November. It's 4 days long and by-invitation-only. I'll be teaching everything I've learned about leadership SINCE I wrote The Purpose Driven Church 20 years ago.
May God bless you.
