Yesterday we learned that God's heart is to take the best care of His priests. If you believe in Jesus, you are also a priest in God's kingdom!
Today in Numbers 18:21 we see how God takes care of priests who serve full-time in the sanctuary, who have dedicated their full-time working hours and careers to serving God and His church:
Numbers 18:21 (NIV)
21 "I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the Tent of Meeting.
Praise God! To make sure that those who serve full-time in God's house are well taken care of, God commanded that the Israelites give a tithe (one tenth of their income) to them. The same principle applies today. God doesn't want those who serve full time in His church to be barely scraping by, or barely having enough to live on, or being at the whim or mercy of those they serve. That's why God commanded that His people should tithe.
Sometimes it's easy to forget that tithing is more than just a personal spiritual discipline, or a form of worship to God, or a way to finance church operations. It's also God's system for meeting the practical needs of those who have dedicated their full time working hours to serving Him and His church.
So here's a question for you: Do you tithe faithfully? Do you take a tenth of all you earn and give it to the church so that the church can accomplish God's purposes and take good care of its staff? If you're not in the habit of tithing, it's time to start making that your habit. God's promise is that He will abundantly bless you when you tithe faithfully (see Malachi 3:8-10).
Tithing is our joint responsibility. Notice in verses 25-26 that even the Levites themselves were commanded to tithe, which means that if you are on staff at a church, God expects you to give a tenth of what you receive back to the church as well.
Praise God. When we follow God's command to tithe faithfully, when we seek His kingdom first, God promises to take care of all of our needs and the needs of those who depend on our tithe.
Lord Jesus, may we as a church be completely united -- in our vision, our purpose, the way we pray, the way we serve, and also in how we give. May we be faithful in giving our tithes and offerings so that the church will be fully equipped to accomplish Your purposes, and so that we can take the best care of those who have dedicated their full time working hours to serving at church. For that is Your heart and we want it to be ours too. To You be all the glory! In Jesus' name we pray, AMEN!
