In Numbers 6:22-27 God tells Moses the type of blessing He wants Aaron the high priest and his sons to say over the people. You may have heard that blessing in churches before.
"The Lord bless you" = God's provision for your life
"and keep you" = God's protection over your life
"The Lord make His face shine upon you" = God's favour
"and be gracious to you" = God's help
"The Lord turn His face toward you" = God's presence
"and give you peace" = God's peace
What can we learn from this? God's heart is to bless His people. His heart is to bless you! God wants to bless you with His provision, His protection, His favour, His help, His presence and His peace in your life. Praise God! Before we ever thought about blessing God, God was already blessing us!
Also, notice in verse 27a it says "So they will put my name on the Israelites". All of God's blessings are wrapped up in His name. That's why the name of Jesus is so powerful. That's why we pray in the name of Jesus.
Finally, verse 27 says "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." When the priest blessed the people, that was the equivalent of God blessing the people. Here again we see God acting through His appointed servants. A blessing from Aaron the priest was the same as a blessing from God, not because the priest was God, but because the priest was God's chosen instrument to communicate and transfer God's blessing to the people.
In the same way, if you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, then by God's mercy and grace you are also appointed a priest in God's kingdom (1 Peter 2:9-10). So when you bless people in Jesus' name, it's the same as the Lord Himself blessing those people. It's not because you are God, but because you are God's chosen instrument to communicate and transfer God's blessing to others. So go ahead and bless people in Jesus' name, believing God Himself will bless them as a result! That's the authority and power God has placed on your life: to receive God's blessing and to give it to others too.
